Tarot is one of the most common forms of understanding our possible futures. Its deeply meaningful connection to our daily lives can be both very involved as well as nice and simple depending on your needs, making it the perfect way to navigate life with a little more clarity.

If you’re interested in learning tarot, this guide is for you. It’s been created with the beginner in mind, yet also helpful for the reader who just needs a bit of clarity or a new perspective.

So can anyone learn and read tarot? Yes! Learning tarot does not require you to be born a medium, psychic or any other naturally sensitive person. All that’s required is a willingness to keep an open heart and an open mind.

As with any practice that reveals things that may have yet to be seen by you, quieting your mind and removing distraction can help speed up your process immensely. Meditation and mindfulness are two concepts that are highly recommended, but whatever system you use to clear your mind prior to your tarot practice, make sure to create a process that you can really fall in love with.

Use the sections below to jump around if you’d like. This guide is meant to be used when you need it. Enjoy!

How To Read Tarot Cards

Tarot is often thought of by the beginner as a black and white process in which the reader has memorized the meaning of the cards based on a pre-approved list of translations.

And while lists like these do exist, it’s important to understand that tarot transcends any one set of definitions assigned to them by any one person.

This is perhaps the most important aspect of tarot. Its use and interpretation is not dogmatic. This leads it out of the realm of incontrovertible truth, and into a practice that engages mind, body and spirit in a process of divining potential futures that may or may not be followed.

The magic of tarot is not really magic at all, but rather an interpretation of the divine and intuitive mind, and it’s important to understand this fundamental truth before embarking on your tarot journey.

Below you’ll find the card meanings. Use these as guidelines at the beginning, then, as you become more comfortable with your practice, let the cards take on meanings that are more appropriate for you.

This form of learning tarot is a sort of “soft” approach, in which you afford your intuitive self a lot of room to interpret the cards in front of you without the need to memorize each and every card and its number.

And in the same way the meanings are an intuitive process, tarot spreads are also up to the reader to interpret.

Yet, as a beginner, it can be helpful to learn the basics of a spreads to get you moving in the right direction.
